Are We Awake Yet?
In the wake of the Zimmerman trial verdict, stories have arisen that are similar to Trayvon’s case. Are we finally waking up and realizing that these crimes happen in Black America all the time?
Darius Simmons, a 13-year-old black teen, was shot by 76-year-old John Henry Spooner, a white man. Spooner accused Simmons of stealing three of his shotguns out of his home. The 76-year-old fatally shot the teen after he denied any involvement of the burglary.
This story has been compared to Trayvon’s case not only in the news but also in the courtroom. Due to striking similarities, the juror selection for Spooner’s trial has been a tough one. Juror members now might be influenced by the outcome of the Zimmerman trial. One white juror candidate said in court on Monday, “I am angry. I feel like the system is failing. I see black teenagers getting arrested for stuff that white people would get ticketed for.” Spooner is charged with first-degree intentional homicide. He faces life in prison if convicted.
I would like to think that maybe America is realizing that these crimes are happening now. But after all the hype dies down about Zimmerman will these crimes be swept under the rug again and not publicized? Or will we wake up and fight for what’s right when it comes to Black America?
