Today In Black History

Today is Bill Cosby’s birthday. He was born on this day in 1937. He is a celebrated comedian, actor and television producer. But I will always remember him as that greatest father figure on television in The Cosby Show.

Cosby was born in Philadelphia, and as a young child was known for telling jokes in class. He later dropped out of high school and joined the Navy. Then attended school at Temple University.

He began doing stand-up comedy at a local coffee house and gained enough momentum to begin touring nationally. This led to his Grammys wins and comedy albums.

Besides two hit television series, Cosby developed the cartoon series Fat Albert and also starred in several films and released the best-selling book Fatherhood. He has received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award in 2003 and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2009 acknowledging his achievements in humanitarianism and comedy.

With all the great achievements Bill Cosby is a great leader and example for African Americans in the world. The Cosby show is hands down the most influential shows for Black families. My mother always said going up that she wanted that “Cosby Show” family and I think we all did.

Happy Birthday Bill Cosby!!
