I love social media. It is a great way to connect and meet new friends. For my generation , social media I believe is being missed used for all the wrong reasons. Yes it is a way to express your self in those 120 word character count but when you exploit someone like what happen in the Stubenvile, Ohio rape case you find out how powerful social media can really be.
The context the Steubenville case is plain and simple, rape. In Steubenville, Ohio two football players raped a 16-year-old girl after a drunken night of partying hopping. The football players Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richardson were very popular throughout the small Ohio town and many were shocked to find out about the incident. The way that people find out about that night was through social media. There were pictures of the girl literally being held like a rag doll. Through social media we not only found pictures but their were videos also on Youtube and Facebook. If the suspects and other high school students would have not used social media this crime would have been swept under the rug but things like this happen everyday on social media it is some what a social norm.
When I watched the ABC 20/20 interview with Ma’lik Richardson, one of the player accused of rape, you could tell that he was lying through his teeth. Many points were made that were obvious about that night. He was asked did the girl look drunk? He said no. Could she understand everything that was going on? He said yes, she wanted to happen. But through the pictures found on social media it was obvious this young girl did not know what was going on. The young football players were later convicted of rape, and are only spending up to one to two years in juvenile detention center.
Social media is a a part of our everyday lives now and when cases like this happen are we using social media for the right reasons. It is so powerful that it can ruin your life. That girl now has to live with this for the rest of her life all because of one picture posted on one site. In my words, “social media is some powerful stuff man.”
